Many travelers on a tight budget will try to book a trip as close to their hopeful departure date as possible. By doing so, you are more likely to get a good deal from one of the many discount hotels. As the cost to the hotel of keeping a room empty is about the same as having it filled, it is in their best interests to fill as many rooms as possible. Discount hotels will lower the prices of their rooms at the last minute in or to prevent many rooms from being empty. It makes more sense for discount hotels to sell their last few rooms at a lower price than to let them stay empty. Many vacationers will rely on these discount hotels in order to be able to find a good but inexpensive trip. Many people have last minute trips down to a fine art, and refuse to pay full price and book any earlier than they feel is necessary.
There are certain sacrifices, however, that are required to be able to rely on discount hotels. First, you must be much more flexible. You cannot have your sights set on a specific hotel, and sometimes not even on a specific location. You must be willing to travel to wherever you can find discount hotels that meet your price range. As well, by waiting until the last minute to book one of the discount hotels put you at the risk of having no trip at all. Many of those that are planning on booking discount hotels have found them all full, leaving them will a week off of work with no destination. Despite these risks, discount hotels are still a great way to travel cheaply but still find nice accommodation.
